Since it began operating in 1997, the See Forever Foundation's mission has been to create learning communities in lower income urban areas where all students, particularly those who have not succeeded in traditional schools, can succeed academically and socially. The Foundation operates the Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools in DC, as well as the Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings’ secure facility for committed youth in Laurel, MD. Our students develop the academic, social, and employment skills they need to build rewarding lives and promote positive change.

Position Description
The Maya Angelou Academy is seeking a math teacher for its six-week summer program. The summer program will run from June 23 to July 30, 2021. This will be a half-day program beginning at 7:30 and ending at 12:30, and will take place in-person. The scholars are young men generally of high-school age who are working towards their high-school diploma or GED.
Responsibilities
The math offered will be designed for a three-week curriculum that will be given twice during the summer period to two different groups of scholars. While we do have a planned curriculum that was used in part last summer, we are very open to creative alternative ideas. The main goal is for us to create a relevant and engaging summer science experience.
While class sizes are very small, the youth we work with have generally not been very successful in school so often need a lot of individual help and instruction.
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Assessing individual learning styles and adapting teaching methods to fit
Creating a classroom and school environment that engages student interest, promotes student leadership and stimulates student learning
Having thoughtful approaches to teaching concepts and sparking student interest while also imparting essential factual knowledge
Managing administrative assignments effectively and with a high level of professionalism and integrity
Modeling and contributing to a school culture of hope and high expectations for achievement
Committing to individualized education for all students, so that students with IEPs do not feel stigmatized and receive the services to which they are entitled
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field
Must have or be eligible for certification in the appropriate content area
Experience working with incarcerated or at-risk youth is desirable
Salary and Benefits
Our rates are comparable to those of other schools in the District of Columbia area. This is a part-time and temporary position therefore no additional benefits will be offered.
