Position Summary:
Shining Stars Montessori Academy PCS (SSMA) is seeking an experienced English Language Learner practitioner/administrator to support our Primary, Lower and Upper Elementary grades for school year 2021-2122.
Under the general supervision of the Director of Special Education and English Language Learner Services, the ELL Coordinator will work with the Primary and Elementary Guides/Teachers in-person (in the classroom) and virtually to support student learning and achievement. The ELL Coordinator creates and implements strategies to support the students’ progress with appropriate learning methods, lesson plans and instructional techniques to evaluate student’s level of English fluency.
Shining Stars Montessori Academy Public Charter School is dually accredited by the American Montessori Society (AMS) and Middle School Association. SSMA is one of only a handful of public Montessori schools in the nation’s capital that offers a program from preschool through the sixth grade. The school’s teachers and staff live the school’s mission of providing a quality and ‘authentic Montessori education’ and so our program is centered on the writings and vision of a Maria Montessori-directed best practices learning environment.
Essential Functions & Accountabilities:
Develop individualized academic programs designed to meet the specific needs of ELL students (to include LEP/NEP)
Implement the individualized programs by working with individual and small groups of students to improve their language skills and academic performance
Administer formal or informal tests to further determine the needs of student(s)
Coordinate the administration of the WIDA, ACCESS and all other required assessments for LEP/NEP/FEP students
Confer with teachers, parents as appropriate to determine language and academic needs of ELL students
Provides language instruction to help students develop the English language domains i.e. listening, speaking, reading, and writing)
Participates in meetings for the purpose of conveying and or gathering information as required with external agencies and or parents
Continually communicate with children on instructional and behavioral expectations to keep them informed of their progress
Manage and prepare records of each student's progress and meeting mandated requirements
Supervise and support the work of ELL/TESOL teachers in the Academic Unit
Stay alert of state and federal ELL testing and reporting guidelines
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education & ELL Services and the Principal
Required Competencies & Qualifications:

Ability to provide services to all children and families with respect and dignity
Demonstrated ability to work successfully with age-appropriate students, staff, and multicultural community
Ability to develop and implement appropriate positive behavior interventions for students
Strong interpersonal skills
Excellent written and oral skills
Knowledge of MS Office Suite and Google Docs
A sense of humor
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Education and/or a related discipline required from accredited college or university
Master’s Degree highly preferred
Teaching license from an accredited college, university, or approved program preferred
Praxis Series preferred
ELL Certification/ License preferred and/or eligible to receive certification
Prior experience in a Montessori and/or PK3-6 classroom environment preferred
Demonstrated success in raising the achievement levels of traditionally underserved and/or English Language Learner students
Spanish, French, or Amharic fluency a plus
Working Conditions:
The working environment characteristics describe those an employee encounters while performing the essentials functions of this job. The position involves sitting for extended periods of time and requires occasionally intra-city traveling.
