Building a strong public charter school sector takes thoughtful planning, strong oversight, and a commitment to putting students first. That was the focus of the DC PCSB October Board meeting.
The meeting began on a celebratory note as Executive Director Dr. Michelle Walker-Davis recognized Ramon Griffin of Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter School, who was named the 2027 DC Teacher of the Year.
“Celebrating an educator like Mr. Griffin also reminds us of what we are working toward when we talk about building a strong sector: schools where excellent educators can do their best work, and students have the opportunities and support they need to thrive,” said Dr. Walker-Davis.
The meeting also marked a bittersweet moment as Board Member Jim Sandman participated in his final meeting. Reflecting on his tenure, Mr. Sandman shared, “Fellow board members, I have such respect for you; I have learned from you, I’ve been inspired by you, I am grateful for our experience together. Thank you for enriching my life.” Vice Chair Yan thanked him for his years of dedicated service, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to ensuring Board decisions are transparent, fair, and consistent. Dr. Walker-Davis echoed those sentiments, recognizing his wisdom, guidance, and unwavering commitment to students and families across the District.
Throughout the evening, the Board addressed several important items focused on school growth, financial health, and accountability. Public hearings were held on two charter amendment requests:
- Monument Academy PCS‘s request for grade expansion, increased enrollment, and a new facility.
- DC Prep PCS‘s request to relocate its Edgewood Middle School campus
The Board is scheduled to vote on both matters during the November board meeting.
The October meeting reinforced the importance of keeping students at the center of every conversation.
As Dr. Walker-Davis reminded the audience, “Across these items, our responsibility is to look carefully at the evidence, listen to the people affected, and ask what each decision will mean for students.”
