Summer Graduation Ceremony to Recognize Class of 2017 Graduates
More than 50 public charter high school students who were unable to attend June graduation ceremonies with their high school class will get the chance to walk in the DC Public Charter School Board’s 2nd annual Summer Graduation Ceremony. These students could have chosen to drop out but with the support of their teachers and families they persisted and completed the coursework to meet the graduation requirements.
WHEN: Tomorrow, Thursday, August 10 at 10 a.m. The live webcast will begin at 10 a.m.
WHERE: The Gala Theater, 3333 14th Street NW, Washington, DC 20010
DETAILS: Students from eight of the city’s public charter high schools will participate. Each student's name, as in the traditional ceremony, will be read aloud as they make their way across the stage in their caps and gowns. Before this summer ceremony was established, students would pick up their diploma from the school, but wouldn't be able to participate in a graduation ceremony with their class. This ceremony allows seniors who needed additional time to complete coursework required for graduation to be recognized.
SPEAKER: Nasir Qadree, the Associate Director of Social Investments at AT&T, will deliver the keynote address. Board Chair Darren Woodruff and Councilmember David Grosso will deliver remarks. Executive Director Scott Pearson will welcome the graduates and present the diplomas.
VISUAL: Students in caps and gowns walking across the stage to receive their diplomas.
