On Thursday August 9, the DC Public Charter School Board honored 91 high school seniors who needed to complete summer classes before they could receive their high school diploma. View photos from the event here. The students attended schools from across the city: Cesar Chavez for Public Policy PCS - Capitol Hill, Cesar Chavez for Public Policy PCS - Parkside, E.L. Haynes PCS, Friendship PCS - Collegiate Academy, IDEA PCS, Kingsman Academy PCS, KIPP DC - College Preparatory Academy PCS, Maya Angelou PCS, National Collegiate Preparatory PCS, and Thurgood Marshall Academy PCS. | The Family Place PCS Adult Students and Their Kids Enjoy Time Together Before the Start of School |
 Photo Credit: The Family Place PCS The Family Place PCS has had an exciting summer getting ready to open its doors as the District’s newest adult public charter school. As part of the school's summer programming, students and their children learned about and visited various family friendly places throughout the city. Some of the students' favorite activities included visiting the Air and Space Museum, the Botanical Gardens, the Georgetown Waterfront, and the National Zoo. These field trips provided students with an opportunity to practice English, spend quality time with their children, and get to know their classmates and school staff. One of The Family Place PCS's students, Glenda, expressed amazement at all of the free resources available throughout the city. She said, “I have lived in the city for a couple years and didn’t know that I could take my children to the zoo for free." The Family Place PCS staff and students look forward to many more exciting activities in this inaugural school year. |
| New Goodwill Excel Center PCS Students Learn What to Expect |
| Adult students filled Goodwill Excel Center PCS's auditorium in early August to learn about what their upcoming school year would look like. The two-day, iExcel orientation, detailed everything from the Code of Conduct to an introduction of teachers and administration. Lawrence Hopkins, Dean of Students, explained why everyone’s common goal is graduation and how the staff at the Goodwill Excel Center will not let the students fail. He said, “We have to create a positive culture at the school and be more solution oriented because ultimately they didn’t want this complexion of people getting their high school diploma down the block from the White House. We had to fight to get here, and we will to fight to stay.” |
| Friendship PCS Teachers Raise the Bar at Standards University |
 Photo Credit: Friendship PCS This summer, more than 700 Friendship PCS teachers from the school's 12 campuses that serve grades pre-k to 12 learned from some of the city’s best academic instructors at Standards University. Hosted by Friendship PCS's Academic Department, the three-day conference provided teachers with a deep analysis of the Common Core State Standards for English language arts and math. Teachers also gained greater insight on how to align their instruction and innovative ideas with rigorous, college-ready standards for STEM, social studies, world languages, art, music, and physical education. |
