The meeting focused on the priorities that will guide DC PCSB’s work throughout the year—from maintaining strong financial oversight and refining accountability systems to using academic data to support better outcomes for students.
“These priorities will serve as our call to action—helping us stay focused on outcomes, make thoughtful and transparent decisions, and keep students at the center of the work ahead,” said Board Chair Shukurat Adamoh-Faniyan.
During the public hearing, the Board considered proposed revisions to the Financial Oversight Policy. The policy establishes clear expectations for public charter school financial management and outlines how DC PCSB identifies and responds when a school shows signs of financial risk.
The public meeting also included the School Finance Monthly Report, which provides the Board and the public with an update on the financial health of public charter schools across the sector.
The Board approved the continued designation of Goodwill Excel Center PCS and St. Coletta Special Education PCS under the Alternative Accountability Framework. This framework recognizes that schools serving specialized student populations may require accountability measures that more accurately reflect their missions, programs, and students.
The Board also read into the record the designations for the Sector Planning Committee and the Academic Data and Accountability Board Committees. These committees will help deepen the Board’s focus on long-term sector needs, academic performance, and transparent decision-making.
The Board also reviewed results from the 2026 DC CAPE.
Public charter school students continued to make gains, with English language arts proficiency increasing by 2.7 percentage points and mathematics proficiency increasing by 1.5 percentage points from the previous school year. These results reflect meaningful progress while also underscoring the work still needed to ensure every student is supported to succeed.
Executive Director Dr. Michelle Walker-Davis connected the evening’s discussions to DC PCSB’s broader responsibility as an authorizer.
“Together, these items reinforce our core authorizing principle: clear expectations, rigorous oversight, and transparent decision-making,” she said.
She closed with a message that will continue to guide the work ahead: “Progress, not victory.”
