BASIS DC Educator Wins DC History Teacher of the Year Award

October 14, 2025

The 2025 History Teacher of the Year, Kyra Zemanick, a history teacher at BASIS DC PCS, was recognized for her transformative approach to educating the youth as she was visited by DC PCSB Executive Director, Dr. Michelle Walker-Davis.

In the midst of doing what she loves, educating the youth, BASIS DC History Teacher of the Year, Kyra Zemanick was met with an unforgettable surprise right in the comfort of her own classroom.

On October 7, 2025, DC Public Charter School Executive Director, Dr. Michelle Walker-Davis, and the State Superintendent of the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), Antoinette S. Mitchell, Ph.D. visited Ms. Zemanick to honor her accomplishments, and voice their words of gratitude in front of the staff and students of BASIS DC.

“Some students think history isn’t an exciting topic, but it boils down to teachers’ bringing it alive, underscoring the meaning of why knowing history is important for our present,” said Dr. Walker-Davis.

Dr. Mitchell also applauded Ms. Zemanick’s dedication to providing a quality education.

“You design lessons that challenge traditional narratives, push students to look deeper, and invite everyone to think critically about what they’re learning.”

When asked about what receiving such a prestigious award meant to her, Ms. Zemanick discussed the hard work that goes into being a history educator.

“It is recognition out of many years of hard work, trying to teach the stories of people whose voices have long been silenced. It really means a lot to me.”
