Capital Village PCS to Close at End of School Year

January 27, 2026

Capital Village Public Charter School has announced that it will complete the current school year and relinquish its charter in June 2026. The school will continue full operations through the end of the school year under its charter with DC PCSB.

As part of this transition, Capital Village PCS is exploring a potential partnership with Social Justice PCS. The goal of this early exploration is to strengthen the middle school experience and expand opportunities and resources for students. It is important to note that this is an initial conversation between the two schools, and no approval from DC Public Charter School Board (DC PCSB) has been granted or required at this stage.

This decision follows years of informal collaboration between the two schools, which were founded in the same year and share core commitments to equity, social justice, and personalized learning. Social Justice PCS will move into a new, modern facility near the Fort Totten Metro Station in Fall 2026, creating an opportunity for school leaders to consider ways to bring their communities together.

If the schools proceed with a joint model, it could serve more students, preserving the close-knit feel of a small school while offering broader access to academic pathways, clubs, sports, and student support services. School leaders also cite the potential for increased financial stability as a key benefit, particularly at a time when small schools nationwide are navigating enrollment and funding challenges.

Families who wish to apply to attend Social Justice PCS will need to submit an application through the My School DC lottery and select Social Justice PCS as their first choice. Social Justice PCS anticipates being able to accommodate all Capital Village families who choose to enroll.

School leaders from both schools plan to host a series of information sessions early next year to help families connect with Social Justice PCS staff and learn more about the potential transition. In addition, DC PCSB Enrollment Specialists will reach out to every Capital Village family to ensure they are aware of all available school options for the 2026–27 school year.
