Celebrating National Mentoring Month: Empowering Young Women at Thurgood Marshall Academy PCS
EmpowerHER G.E.M.S was born from a simple conversation among three dedicated TMA faculty members Zabrina Ames, Malia McMillan, and Talithia Parker. Observing the need for a supportive and inclusive space for girls at the school, they envisioned a program that would reach students who might not otherwise have access to mentorship opportunities. The founders believed every girl deserves the opportunity to grow, connect, and be inspired—so they decided to build a program that would be open to all.
“I always wanted to share my talents and knowledge with people. There are many [students] that need direction or somebody they can talk to and lean on and I always wanted to be that person for them,” shared Zabrina Ames, TMA Community and External Affairs Coordinator and EmpowerHER G.E.M.S cofounder.
EmpowerHER G.E.M.S launched this past school year with seven mentors who are TMA faculty or staff and 15-20 students. The program includes a variety of activities designed to equip the girls with essential life skills, foster leadership, and encourage self-expression.
“EmpowerHER gave me more confidence and helped me get closer to my teachers and peers,” said Zymia, a 12th grade student and program participant.
Some of this year’s activities include discussions about hygiene, healthy relationships, resume writing, and current events. The girls also participate in field trips and serve as student ambassadors. Through a partnership with Capital One Bank, in March the girls will begin to learn about investing and responsible money management.
“Our mission is to empower these young ladies with the tools, knowledge, and skills to be able to navigate life in and out of school,” added Ames.
EmpowerHER G.E.M.S is more than just a school activity, students say they have found a newfound sense of confidence and belonging since joining.
Families are also excited about what their daughters are learning through the mentoring program.
“I felt like I needed someone to communicate with, and now I feel comfortable. I can talk to them [mentors] if I need anything,” said Jayden, 10th grade student and program participant.
“My mom loves the program because of the things we talk about. It helps me get out of my shell,” shared Zahria, 10th grade student and program participant.
