Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the history and accomplishments of Hispanic/Latino Americans, and public charter schools in DC found different, unique ways to do exactly that.
At E.L. Haynes PCS staff got creative and dressed up as icons from the Hispanic community like Jennifer Lopez, Ellen Ochoa, and even fictional characters like Wednesday Addams.
The scholars at KIPP DC Lead Academy brought in the observation with an assembly. They enjoyed lively music, fun games, and celebrated by honoring their mascot, the llama, which is originally from Peru.
The community at Friendship Southeast Academy created an unforgettable Hispanic Heritage Month Gallery Walk. They filled their halls with many types of decorations, played sports, danced, taught themselves and their peers about Hispanic icons, and more.
The young scholars at Bridges PCS dove into a read-aloud of “Turning Pages: My Life Story,” a book written by Hispanic Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, followed by a STEM “Tower of Knowledge” challenge to test both their literacy and engineering skills!
As we scrolled through social media over the last month, it was invigorating to see how DC public charter schools came together to elevate the voices of the Hispanic and Latino American community.
