Four Groups Seek to Open Public Charter Schools

January 10, 2020

The board received four proposals to open new public charter schools.

This week, the DC Public Charter School Board received four proposals from groups seeking to open public charter schools in Washington, DC. If approved, the schools would open in school year 2021-22.

The applications include:

  • Two PK3-5 schools

-A dual language immersion in both Mandarin-English and Spanish-English

-An Arabic immersion school

  • A middle/high school that will immerse students in inquiry-based learning experiences; and

  • A high school that will focus on business and entrepreneurship.

During the application process, each applicant is evaluated through a rigorous review process that includes capacity interviews with the founding groups and public hearings for the community to voice their opinion on the proposed schools.

Through our Standard of Approval, applicants are required and evaluated on the strength of their demonstrated need for the school; sufficient progress in developing the plan; consistency of the mission and philosophy; inclusiveness; and founding group ability.

You can find more information on each proposal below.
