Four New Charter Schools Open in Washington, DC for the New School Year

Washington, D.C. — Parents will have additional charter schools to choose from when four new schools open in the District of Columbia later this month. The new schools are: Inspired Teaching Demonstration Public Charter School, Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School, Shining Stars Montessori Academy Public Charter School and Richard Wright Public Charter School for Journalism and Media Arts. The D.C. Public Charter School Board approved these charter applications in April of 2010.
Inspired Teaching Demonstration PCS
The Inspired Teaching Demonstration School, a professional learning community of master teachers and teacher residents, will ensure that a diverse group of students achieve their potential as accomplished learners, thoughtful citizens, and imaginative and inquisitive problem solvers through a demanding, inquiry-based curriculum. The school has a teacher residency program in which Inspired Teaching Fellows will study under the guidance and supervision of Master Teachers. The school will serve pre-school (age 3) through 8th grade, but will open with pre-school through 3rd grade. Mundo Verde Bilingual PCS
Mundo Verde Bilingual School will prepare students to be successful and compassionate global stewards of their communities through an engaging curriculum focused on sustainability and biliteracy. As the city’s first “green” school, Mundo Verde’s environmental sustainability is integrated into all aspects of the school’s curriculum and operations. All students will learn to speak, read and write in English and Spanish. The immersion language program starts at age 3 and continues through 8th grade. Mundo Verde will initially offer preschool through kindergarten classes for three, four and five year olds and will add grades until it serves students through the 8th grade.
