First Day, Bright Future: Celebrating the Promise of Public Charter Education
There is nothing quite like the energy and excitement of the first day of school!
Dr. Michelle Walker-Davis, DC PCSB Executive Director, kicked off her first school visit of the 2026–27 school year at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School. From the moment of arrival, the joy, anticipation, and sense of possibility that come with a new beginning were unmistakable.
Walking the halls, meeting students, and seeing educators in action served as a powerful reminder of why this work matters. Every school year represents another opportunity for scholars to learn, grow, discover their strengths, and begin imagining the future they want to create.
E.L. Haynes PCS is also an example of what is possible when we invest in strong schools and provide families with quality public school options. The school was recently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top high schools in Washington, DC, an achievement worth celebrating.
In a recent editorial in The Washington Informer, Dr. Walker-Davis highlighted that great schools extend beyond test scores, rankings, or graduation rates. Public charter schools help prepare young people to lead, solve problems, and shape the future of our city. That is the promise of public charter education: creating opportunities for students to thrive while giving families access to schools that meet their unique needs.
