Washington, D.C. —The DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB) today announced that Naomi Rubin DeVeaux has been appointed deputy executive director, replacing Tamara Lumpkin who resigned from her post on Monday.  DeVeaux is currently deputy executive director of Friends of Choice in Urban Schools (FOCUS), a Washington, DC-based charter advocacy organization.  Her first day at the Board will be January 30, 2012.

“Naomi’s commitment to charter schools, her knowledge of the DC charter and schools community, and her strong leadership skills make her a tremendous addition to the PCSB team,” said Scott Pearson, PCSB Executive Director. “I look forward to her contributions to our work in support of high quality and autonomous charter schools.”

DeVeaux brings strong credentials to the PCSB.  She developed the FOCUS School Quality Dashboard, the only interactive, web-based tool that displays DC’s public school performance on statewide tests in an easy-to-read format.  She worked closely with the PCSB in developing the revised version of the Performance Management Framework (PMF), the Board’s evaluation tool for assessing and monitoring charter school performance. In addition, she developed FOCUS’ school services program, which includes a nationally recognized charter school startup program. She is a former English and literacy teacher from California and was the English department chair at the SEED Public Charter School of Washington, DC.

“I am thrilled at this opportunity and believe that my decade of public school classroom experience and five years at FOCUS will help me continue to increase the quality of the charter school sector in DC,” DeVeaux said.  “I believe that through autonomy, fair and transparent accountability, and a commitment to academic excellence, public charter schools will be able to reach new heights in providing quality educational options to DC students,” she said.

The D.C. Public Charter School Board oversees 53 public charter schools on 98 campuses, serving more than 32,000 students living in every ward of the city. Public charter schools serve 40% of all public school students in Washington, D.C. Learn more about the PCSB at www.dcpubliccharter.com.
