A New Look, A Better Experience: Why DC PCSB Is Redesigning Its Website
The DC Public Charter School Board (DC PCSB) is excited to announce a comprehensive redesign of its website, a change driven not by internal preference, but by the voices of the very community it serves.
Over the past several months, DC PCSB engaged in ongoing conversations with families, school leaders, our board, staff, and community members to better understand how people actually use the website and where it was falling short. These conversations culminated in a series of sessions specifically designed to surface real, everyday frustrations: pages that were hard to find, information that took too many clicks to reach, and a search function that too often left users frustrated or empty-handed.
We are also redesigning Wednesday Bulletin, a weekly publication that we have been emailing to school leaders for years. It will now live on the website, making it easier to navigate and easier to use.
Rather than guessing at solutions, DC PCSB built its redesign plan directly from this feedback. The result is a website shaped by the people who rely on it most. Three themes emerged clearly from the community input, and each is central to the redesign:
A more user-friendly experience. The new site is built around how visitors actually navigate, not how the organization is internally structured. That means fewer dead ends and a smoother path from question to answer.
Easier access to key pages and FAQs. Frequently sought information, including enrollment details, school performance data, DC PCSB policies, board meetings, and commonly asked questions, will be surfaced more prominently, cutting down on the digging that frustrated so many users in the past.
An improved search function. A more capable, accurate search tool will help users find what they need on the first try, whether they're a parent or caregiver looking for a specific school's information or a researcher seeking historical documents.
Quicker access to important pages. A theme we saw in conversations with both families, members of the community, and school leaders was frustration about how they each struggled to easily find the information that was most relevant to them; they were getting bogged down in pages that weren’t important to how they used our website. Our new website aims to alleviate this by clearly delineating the navigation based on how and why a user is on our site.
This redesign isn't only about efficiency; it's also about experience. The updated visual layout has been crafted with both aesthetics and accessibility in mind, ensuring the site is not only easier to navigate but easier to read and interact with for all users, including those relying on assistive technologies.
Perhaps most importantly, this redesign reflects DC PCSB's commitment to listening. By inviting relevant parties into the process — through direct discussions and open sessions — the organization ensured that the changes address real needs, not assumptions.
