Washington, D.C. — The DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB) today announced that Nicole L. Streeter has been appointed as the Board’s first General Counsel. Streeter has a breadth of legal experience in government and nonprofits, and was the former deputy general counsel for DC Public Schools.  Her first day at the Board is October 23.

“Nicole’s extensive legal background and her experience with the legislative process at the D.C. Council makes her a tremendous addition to the PCSB team,” said Scott Pearson, PCSB Executive Director.  “We are excited to have our own in-house legal counsel who will lead the Board’s legal and legislative efforts as we work to protect the autonomy of charter schools.  I thank O’Melveny and Myers for providing many years of pro bono counsel to the Board, which will continue.”

Streeter brings strong legal credentials to PCSB.  She began her career in the District of Columbia as a litigator in the U.S. Department of Justice Attorney General’s Honors Program, the largest and most prestigious federal entry-level attorney hiring program of its kind. She served as Director of Legal Services for Covenant House Washington before joining the staff of then Ward 7 Councilmember Vincent C. Gray as his legislative counsel. She later worked on several pieces of education legislation with Gray as Council Chairman, including the Public Education Reform Amendment Act of 2007, which marked the historic shift in DC public education to mayoral control, and the Pre-K Enhancement and Expansion Amendment Act of 2008.  Streeter later served as Deputy General Counsel for DC Public Schools, where she provided legal advice and counsel on education matters and drafted legislation and rulemaking. She is admitted to the Supreme Court of the State of California and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

“I am thrilled at the opportunity to develop and shape PCSB’s legal and legislative mission as its first General Counsel,” Streeter said.  “And I’m excited to return to education law and work on behalf of the District’s youth.”

Streeter is currently active in the DC Bar, serving on the Steering Committee of the Bar’s District Affairs section.  She is also an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity International, having participated in international builds for more than 10 years.
