Notice of Petition to Amend Charter: Enrollment Ceiling Increase - Carlos Rosario PCS

Due Date

July 18, 2016

Vote Date

September 19, 2016

Summary

The District of Columbia Public Charter School Board (“DC PCSB”) announces an opportunity for the public to submit comment on a request to increase its enrollment ceiling submitted by Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School (“Carlos Rosario PCS”) on June 3, 2016.

Carlos Rosario Public Charter School (Carlos Rosario PCS) petitions to increase its enrollment ceiling from 1,950 students to 2,200 by school year 2020-21. Carlos Rosario PCS’s enrollment ceiling increase requests is driven by two factors: Facility expansion and anticipated increase in demand.  Beginning in school year 2016-17, Carlos Rosario PCS will absorb additional classrooms and offices at its 1100 Harvard Street NW facility that were previously leased by CentroNia. This additional space will allow the school to offer additional courses and serve more students. Also, the school expects an influx in applications from undocumented immigrant students who want to defer deportation in association with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative, which requires undocumented immigrants who want to defer deportation to be in school (if they do not have a diploma or GED certificate).

Pursuant to the School Reform Act, D.C. Code 38-1802 et seq., a charter school must submit a petition to revise its charter, which includes its Enrollment Ceiling.
