Notice of Petition to Amend Charter-Mission and Curriculum Changes

Due Date

May 18, 2015

Vote Date

June 15, 2015

Summary

The District of Columbia Public Charter School Board (“PCSB”) announces an opportunity for the public to submit comment on a request submitted by William E. Doar, Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts (“WEDJ PCS”) on March 6, 2015 to amend its charter by changing its mission statement and curriculum.

WEDJ PCS was established in 2004 with the mission “to provide a college-preparatory academic and artistic learning environment that challenges students to reach their maximum intellectual, artistic, social, and emotional development as rapidly as their talents permit.””  The school has requested to revise its mission statement to read as follows: “The mission of the William E. Doar Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts is to prepare students to succeed in high school and beyond by providing an academically rigorous learning environment enriched by a diverse performing arts program.”  Additionally, the school would like to implement multiple new curriculums including Journeys, enVisionMATH, The Readers Journey, and Glencoe Math starting in the 2014-15 school year, which will replace America’s Choice.

Pursuant to the School Reform Act, D.C. Code 38-1802 et seq., a charter school must submit a petition to revise its charter, which includes its mission and curriculum.
