The District of Columbia Public Charter School Board (“PCSB”) announces an opportunity for the public to submit comment on a request submitted by Potomac Preparatory Public Charter School (“Potomac Prep PCS”) on March 16, 2015 to amend its charter by changing its mission statement, goals, curriculum, and enrollment ceiling.
Potomac Prep is requesting to change its mission to “Potomac Prep’s new mission is to prepare scholars for college and 21st century careers through powerful learning opportunities in a personalized and professional environment.” Additionally, Potomac Prep PCS has decided to adopt the Performance Management Framework targets as goals for school years 2014-15, 15-16, and 16-17, and to adopt the Performance Management Framework as goals for school years 2017-18 and 2018-19. Regarding its curriculum, the school proposes that its new curricular focus on STEAM will enhance the school’s current curriculum by adding additional arts infusion through Project Lead The Way (PLTW) in grades Pre K- 5 and by utilizing PLTW in grades 6-8 to add additional science, technology, engineering and math concentrations. Both programs emphasize literacy, student led thinking and 21st century learning. For its enrollment ceiling, the school will receive a small increase from its current ceiling of 425 students to 435 students effective immediately, pending the PCSB’s approval
Pursuant to the School Reform Act, D.C. Code 38-1802 et seq., a charter school must submit a petition to revise its charter, which includes its mission, goals, curriculum and enrollment ceiling.
