Mayor Muriel Bowser announced today her nomination of Steve Bumbaugh to serve on the Public Charter School Board.

Bumbaugh currently serves as the Manager of Breakthrough Schools: DC at CityBridge Foundation, an organization that works to build a citywide system of high-performing schools in the District.  He began his career working for the "I have a Dream” Foundation, a program that promised free college tuition to middle school students in the Anacostia neighborhood. If confirmed, Mr. Bumbaugh will bring to the board many years of experience working in education, philanthropy and issues related to urban poverty.

Previously, Bumbaugh served as the President of the ECMC Foundation, a national funder focusing on education issues in low-income communities.  He was also the first executive director of the Specialty Family Foundation, a funder focusing on education, health, and food security issues in low-income communities in Southern California.  Bumbaugh has also published numerous articles and has been a regular speaker on issues related to poverty and race.

“Steve is an excellent choice,” said Scott Pearson, Executive Director of the Public Charter School Board.  “He has deep and extensive expertise on educational issues related to low income communities.”

If confirmed, Bumbaugh will replace Herb Tillery, who left the board in November 2014.

Mayor Bowser also named Hanseul Kang as State Superintendent of Education.

“Mayor Bowser is committed to education and continues to make excellent appointments, like Hanseul Kang, to her administration,” said Pearson. “We look forward to working closely with the superintendent.”
