What Families Should Know About Student Enrollment at DC Public Charter Schools

June 6, 2025

DC’s public charter schools offer families choice, innovation, and access to quality education, but understanding the enrollment process is key. Start early, explore your options, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Use available resources from My School DC, in addition to oversight from DC PCSB. We oversee public charter schools to ensure they meet performance and accountability standards.

Public charter schools in DC are tuition-free, independently operated public schools that are open to all students no matter where they live in the city.

How Enrollment Works

Enrollment in DC’s public charter schools is managed through the My School DC Common Lottery system, a citywide application for families seeking to attend DC public charter schools. However, adult schools do not participate.

Here’s a typical timeline for enrollment, DC PCSB recommends checking the My School DC website or the school’s website for the dates to apply. Late December to early February - Application window opens

  • Early March - Application deadline
  • Late March - Lottery results released
  • April to May - Enrollment deadline (must accept the offer by completing the forms, including  enrollment forms)

Choosing the Right School

With more than 130 public charter schools serving grades PK3 through 12 and adult learners, there’s something for every learner including STEM-focused schools to dual-language programs, Montessori models, college-prep academies, and vocational programs.

Here’s how to find your best choice:

  • Use the My School DC Finder Tool
  • Attend virtual or in-person open houses
  • Review the school profiles to compare performance, graduation rates, and student satisfaction.

Fair Access and Equity

Public charter schools cannot screen students based on academic performance or behavior. Admission is lottery-based and equal opportunity, with some schools giving a preference to siblings of current students, families living within certain geographic zones, and children of school staff.

Students with disabilities, English learners, and other special populations are fully supported through inclusive programming and services.

Final Tips for a Smooth Enrollment

  • Apply early.
  • Select multiple schools. You can choose up to 12 schools in your application.
  • Stay organized. Keep track of deadlines, documents, and school communications.
  • If you’re an adult learner, visit the school’s website to learn how to enroll in the program.
