Washington, DC – Dr. Michelle J. Walker-Davis, executive director of the DC Public Charter School Board made the following statement about today’s announcement on the the 2023 PARCC testing results:
“These test results show that many students are continuing to improve in our schools,” said Executive Director of the DC Public Charter School Board Dr. Michelle J. Walker-Davis. “However, we need to continue to shine a light on academic performance, particularly for those who made less progress than we had hoped. We will use these results to inform further work on our revised accountability framework.”
The PARCC assessments, administered in spring 2023, measured students’ performance in English Language Arts (ELA) and math in grades 3-8 and high school grades 9-12 (adult learners do not take the assessment). The test has five performance levels, with level 4 and level 5 indicating readiness for college and career. The District has determined that performing at this rigorous level means you are ready for career and college. For the charter school sector, the number of students in grades 3-8 who scored at or above level 4 increased by 4.1 percentage points in ELA and 2.7 percentage points in math, and the number of students in grades 9-12 who scored at or above level 4 increased by 1.4 percentage point in ELA and decreased by 1.0 percentage points in math.
The DC Public Charter School Board uses PARCC and other tools to evaluate and monitor public charter schools.
Revising our Accountability Framework
DC PCSB is currently revising our accountability framework, which analyzes school performance as a part of our effort to achieve excellent public charter school education in the City.
In order to ensure that all students receive a quality education, the revised accountability framework will include more visibility in students who are furthest from opportunity, increases to the bar for proficiency, will offer more distinction between the levels of performance across schools, and more.
