Barbara Nophlin and Steve Bumbaugh Join PCSB
Steve Bumbaugh and Barbara Nophlin have been sworn-in for terms on the DC Public Charter School Board. This is Bumbaugh’s first appointment to the Board. He replaces Herb Tillery, and will fill the remainder of Tillery’s term, to end on February 24, 2017, at which point he will eligible for a full four-year term. This is Barbara’s second appointment to the Board. Her new term is set to end on February 24, 2019. Board members are eligible to serve two four-year terms.
Bumbaugh currently serves as the Manager of Breakthrough Schools: DC at CityBridge Foundation, an organization that works to build a citywide system of high-performing schools in the District. He began his career working for the "I Have a Dream” Foundation, a program that promised free college tuition to middle school students in the Anacostia neighborhood.
During Barbara’s first-term on the Board, she voted to improve and expand PCSB’s innovative Performance Management Framework, and voted to approve seven new and diverse public charter schools, as well as expand many existing Tier 1 public charter school organizations. Nophlin also held schools to high-standards, voting to close 13 public charter schools. Prior to joining the Board, Nophlin served as Principal of Paul Public Charter School and Amidon Elementary School, a DCPS school. When she joined the Board, she was the first former school leader to become a member of the Board.
Prior to being sworn-in, both Bumbaugh and Nophlin were nominted by Mayor Bowser and confirmed by the City Council, led by Education Committee Chairman David Grosso. Both Bumbaugh and Nophlin offered testimony before the Education Committee, and were supported unanimously by the City Council.
