Washington, D.C. — DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB) voted May 20 to renew the charter of Dorothy I. Height Community Academy Public Charter School (CAPCS) for a second 15-year term with the condition that CAPCS Amos 3 campus must achieve a score of 40 on the Performance Management Framework (PMF), PCSB’s tool for assessing and monitoring charter schools, and if it does not, must close its Amos 3 campus by June 2014.

CAPCS operates five campuses, including an online program, in Wards 2, 4 and 5, serving 1,697 students in PK-8th grade.

“We are happy to see that most of the CAPCS portfolio continues to improve its programs,” said PCSB Board Chair John H. “Skip” McKoy. “The school's new board seems to be bringing increased levels of energy and focus on quality, and we expect increasingly high levels of performance.”

PCSB thoroughly reviewed the school’s renewal petition and found that CAPCS has substantially met its charter goals and student academic expectations, except at its Amos 3 campus which led PCSB to recommend that the campus improve or it will be closed.  The Amos 3 campus, located at 1400 First Street, NW in Ward 5, serves 479 students in PK3 through 8th grade.

During the past 15 years CAPCS has been substantially compliant with general, special education, and financial laws and is economically viable.  To read the CAPCS renewal report click here.
