Washington, D.C. — The Charter school community was out in force on Saturday, January 8 at the Washington Convention Center to meet parents, families and teachers eager to find a new school home. Based on required registrations, organizers estimated that more than 2000 people filled the ballroom at the convention center at the 2nd annual charter school recruitment expo.

The event offered parents and teachers a one-stop opportunity to meet with school leaders to learn about the 52 D.C. charter schools ahead of the enrollment period for the 2011-2012 school year. Teachers and others came seeking the many job opportunities available in charter schools. The expo is sponsored by the D.C. Public Charter School Board (PCSB), the D.C. Association of Chartered Public Schools and Friends of Choice in Urban Schools (FOCUS).

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray stopped by the event and praised the charter school community for contributing to the high quality educational options in the District of Columbia. Gray challenged charter school leaders with two of his education priorities. He asked school leaders who now serve grades K-8 to consider serving pre-school and pre-kindergarten so that all of the District’s three and four-year-olds can have access to a quality early childhood education. He also urged charter schools to help address special education needs by serving more special education students in the schools instead of having them placed outside the District.

If you would like to receive updates about next year’s expo complete the form below.

The D.C. Public Charter School Board currently oversees 52 public charter schools on 93 campuses serving more than 29,000 students living in every ward of the city. Public charter schools now serve approximately 39% of all public school students in Washington, D.C. Learn more about PCSB at www.dcpubliccharter.com.
