Chavez Scholars Meet with UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova
By Ashlee Lawson
Wednesday, February 10, Chavez Schools welcomed UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova to their Capitol Hill campus for a lively dialogue about the importance of education as a way to participate as a global citizen and how to build a generation of women who will invest in their countries and communities.
Chavez young women scholars in grades 6-12 from each campus asked Director-General Bokova questions about her experiences and challenges as a woman in international diplomacy and how she has worked to overcome them.
“I travel all over the world,” Bokova said. “Education is so essential for women. We cannot talk about gender equality without talking about education.”
Bokova’s visit to Chavez Schools was co-hosted by The Wilson Center’s Women in Public Service Project.
