Washington, D.C. —The DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB) voted, in a special meeting March 12, not to revoke the charter of Community Academy Public Charter School (CAPCS) and to accept CAPCS’ transition plan regarding the closure of their Rand campus. The plan addresses PCSB’s concerns about the composition and number of students, faculty, staff and administrators at the remaining CAPCS campuses and the continued use of the Rand facilities to benefit most students and families who choose to remain within the CAPCS school system.
Last month the PCSB voted to accept Community Academy’s decision to shut down the Rand campus at the end of this school year. The Rand campus currently serves 339 students in pre-school through the 5th grade.
In December 2011, the PCSB voted to propose revocation of the charter of Community Academy because of a variety of academic and other concerns, most significantly the poor 2010-2011 academic performance at its Rand Campus, a Tier 3 school scoring 19.5% out of 100 on PCSB’s Performance Management Framework (PMF).
Consistent with its closure procedures, the PCSB has scheduled an enrollment fair for Friday, March 16 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm to assist Rand parents and families in identifying new schools for their children for the next school year. The fair will be held at the Rand campus, 33 Riggs Road, NE, Washington, DC 20011.
The DC Public Charter School Board currently oversees 53 public charter schools on 98 campuses serving nearly 32,000 students living in every ward of the city. Public charter schools serve 41% of all public school students in Washington, D.C. Learn more about the PCSB and the Performance Management Framework at www.dcpubliccharter.com
