The end of the 2022-2023 school year has arrived and many public charter schools’ last days are fast-approaching, starting this week. Please view the table below for official dates.
Additionally, as school communities begin summer programming and look toward the upcoming school year, several staff transitions have been announced, including:
Erika Bryant, Executive Director of Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School, will be transitioning out of her role at the end of this school year, on June 23. She will stay on as Strategic Advisor and Fundraiser until December 31, 2023. Bobby Caballero, EW Stokes’ Brookland Campus Director, will step up as Interim Chief.
Capital City Public Charter School has two leadership changes next school year. As they previously announced, current Head of School, Karen Dresden, will be stepping down after 23 years of service. Laina Cox, their founding Middle School Principal, will become their Principal on July 1, 2023. She will be the school’s first Black leader. Further, Justin Lopez-Cardoze, DC’s Teacher of the Year in 2020, has been appointed to serve as its Middle School Principal. Lopez-Cardoze is their first Latino principal, and “has a deep commitment to student voice, student experience, and academic rigor with a focus on equity and inclusion,” according to the school’s announcement.
Two Rivers PCS recently welcomed a new Executive Director, Belicia Reaves. She has 20 years of education experience, and previously worked with Capital City PCS as their High School Principal. Reaves will step into her position on July 10, 2023.
Principal and founder of Roots PCS, Dr. Bernida Thompson, has announced her retirement after more than 50 years in education.
Lastly, SEED PCS’ Head of School, Dr. Brian Rahman, is stepping down after three years in the position and 10 years of leadership across the SEED network. The school’s current Director of Student Life, Christopher Rooks, will assume the role of Interim Head of School until SEED’s Board hires a permanent head of school. Former leader of the SEED DC leadership team and co-head of school at the SEED school in Maryland, Erika Asikoye, will provide advice during the interim.
