Enrollment Ceiling Increase - Excel Academy PCS

April 18, 2016

The District of Columbia Public Charter School Board (“DC PCSB”) announces an opportunity for the public to submit comment on a request to amend its number of school days submitted by Excel Academy Public Charter School (“Excel Academy PCS”) on March 7, 2016.

Excel Academy operates a single campus in Ward 8 serving students in grades prekindergarten-3 through eighth.  The school would like to amend its charter to require 180 days on the school calendar, instead of the 192 days that are currently required per its existing charter agreement.  After reviewing data on the effectiveness of the additional 12 days (known as “Mandatory Saturday Academies”), the school obtained feedback from parents and teachers, and reviewed other schools’ student support strategies in order to develop an alternative student support program that combines targeted, individualized interventions for students that includes afterschool tutoring.

Pursuant to the School Reform Act, D.C. Code 38-1802 et seq., a charter school must submit a petition to revise its charter, which includes its number of school days in operation.
