Five Groups Seek to Open Public Charter Schools

This week, the DC Public Charter School received five proposals from groups seeking to open public charter schools in Washington, DC. If approved, the schools would open in the school year 2022-23.

The applications include: an elementary/middle Big Picture Learning schools; 6-12 community-based school; Montessori elementary school; a K-5 student-centered school; and a middle school focused on business studies.

During the application process, each applicant is evaluated through a rigorous review process that includes capacity interviews with the founding groups and public hearings for the community to voice their opinion on the proposed schools. 

Through our Standard of Approval, applicants are required and evaluated on the strength of their demonstrated need for the school; sufficient progress in developing the plan; consistency of the mission and philosophy; inclusiveness; and founding group ability.

Capital Experience Lab

 

Mission

The mission of Capital Experience Lab (CapX Lab)is to empower 6th - 12th-grade students in Washington, DC to harness the resources of their world-class city in the service of their dreams, to navigate diverse environments, and to achieve post-secondary success. To fulfill our mission, we will immerse students in community-based learning experiences grounded in the CapX core values, student-centered design elements, and the science of learning and development.

DC Wildflower

 

Mission

The mission of DC Wildflower Public Charter School (DCWPCS) is to serve a larger, universal purpose in eliminating racial and social discrimination and hierarchy – and offer an intimate liberatory educational experience. We believe intentionally small,  community embedded,  teacher-led Montessori learning environments will accelerate the journey for students of the global majority to be and feel safe, seen, and heard. DCWPCS is where students' identities are affirmed and their genius unleashed!

M.E.C.C.A. Business Learning Institute

 
Mission The mission of MBLI is to create a successful business learning pathway for middle through high school students that sufficiently prepares students for collegiate business studies and inspires them to be future stewards of the business community. The vision is to see enrolled students graduate from MBLI well prepared for academic success in college and pre-trained to lead, manage, and conduct business competently in a global society.
