Former Board Chair Brian Jones Honored with the Board’s Award for Exceptional Service
The DC Public Charter School Board’s Award of Exceptional Service was awarded to Brian Jones, former board member and chairman from 2007 – 2013 at the board meeting on Monday September 19. The award is given to individuals who through volunteer effort, have made substantial contributions over a sustained period of time to the Board, and by doing so, have made it possible for students in the District of Columbia to access quality educational choices.
Brian’s leadership transformed the Board into one of the best authorizers in the country. He developed and launched:
- the Performance Management Framework to measure and improve school academic quality, and used it to ensure the very best public charter schools – the Tier 1 schools – grew to educate more children.
- the Financial Audit Reports, to measure and improve financial health;
- the plans for equity reports; and,
- the common lottery.
All of these developments played a major role in the new era of collaboration with our district partners. As Don Soifer, DC PCSB Vice Chair, said “[His] leadership made our organization, and our city, better in ways we’ll still be recognizing for years to come.”
Scott Pearson, Executive Director, also acknowledged Brian’s impact, “Brian was the model of what a board chair should be: supportive, collaborative, and clear with his priorities. Most importantly, he was an absolute rock when it came to school quality. Brian quickly became a mentor to me and is now a lifelong friend.”
Congratulations, Brian!
Jones was awarded the Board's highest honor of exceptional service on Sept. 20.
