Public Charter Schools Headed in the Right Direction |
Fourth Year of Equity Reports |
Every year, the city releases School Equity Reports, which provide unprecedented levels of information on how well each public and public charter school in the District responds to the diverse needs of the students they educate. The three-year trend shows that traditional public schools and public charter schools are consistently doing better. Students are scoring higher on PARCC, graduating at higher rates, missing fewer days in school, and more likely to stay in the same school until the end of the year. Additionally schools have significantly reduced their discipline rates.

Why I Love My Public Charter School |
![]() Photo Credit: Maya Angelou Public Charter School I love [the Hospitality and Tourism program at Maya Angelou PCS] because I have gone on many amazing trips like the Spirit of Washington boat ride and to the huge house in Virginia for our program retreat. One of my favorite trips was the Spirit of Washington because I enjoyed the nice breeze and I enjoyed dancing on the dance floor. Ms. Mary, Ms. Mac, and Ms. Yoba finally got to see my dance moves! Being in this program has brought me closer to my classmates because I have built strong relationships with them. [The program] has also helped me become a better writer and prepare me for college. The Third Annual Science Fair at Harmony Public Charter School |

In December 2016, Harmony DC PCS held its third annual Science Fair, with 64 student participants from Kindergarten through 5th grade. After a tough competition, second grader Regan T. and fifth graders Kayla H. and Naim W. took away the grand awards. Harmony believes it is crucial for students to go through the scientific process. As part of the curriculum, students in all grades work on a science fair project and present it to their peers, teachers, parents, and the community at the Harmony Science and Engineering Fair.

E.L. Haynes Public Charter School Gets a New Soccer Field |
The E.L. Haynes community has a new gorgeous turf soccer field. The $1.3 million project provides students with a safe place to play intramural and interscholastic sports, both during and outside the school day. Coupled with a high quality physical education and fitness program, this project supports E.L. Haynes’ school-wide mission to ensure that students develop academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Support for the project was provided by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, the U.S. Soccer Foundation, and private donors. |
A New Theatre for Capital City Public Charter School |
![]() Photo Credit: Capital City Public Charter School To further its ability to provide meaningful arts experiences to every student, Capital City transformed an unused 9,200 square foot space into a state-of-the-art theatre for all its students in grades PreK - 12. The new 420-seat theatre will function as both an instructional and performing space for the arts.
