National Teacher Appreciation Week: Hugh Beshers
This week PCSB will highlight public charter school teachers that work hard every day to prepare DC’s public charter school students for college and the workforce. From PK to adult education programs, public charter school teachers strive to increase the academic performance and school culture for their students.
At Carlos Rosario, Hugh Beshers is committed to helping adult learners achieve their dreams. For 14 years Mr. Beshers has taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at Carlos Rosario International PCS. Throughout his tenure, he has exemplified teaching excellence that’s reflective of the school’s mission.
Mr. Beshers’ students demonstrate consistent progress on language acquisition. For example, in SY 2013-2014, his students surpassed the average overall passing rate for ESL Level 1 scoring an overall rate of 89%. His students also improved their English grammar scores by 103%.
Furthermore, Mr. Beshers’ commitment to the belief that all students can learn is exemplified through the extra-curricular activities he regularly leads. Last school year he led a Singing in English activity where students with various ESL levels gathered to learn songs in English. This school year, he’s leading an afterschool activity with students that allows them to practice foundational grammar in English.
When asked about his favorite aspect of teaching at Carlos Rosario, Mr. Beshers said, “observing students grow from learning the alphabet to applying their skills to start a career.”
He was a founding member of the Carlos Rosario Academic Review Committee, a team of teachers and counselors who convene to determine how best to support adult language learners struggling academically. This committee is now an integral part of the school’s student achievement strategy.
Join us in thanking Mr. Besher for his teaching excellence!
