During the most recent installment of the Ahead of the Curve Conference series, hosted by PCSB and Fight for Children, more than 200 teachers and administrators from all over DC came together to attend workshops and hear lectures on innovative approaches to classroom management and the benefits of mindfulness in the classroom.

The day began with remarks from PCSB Chair Darren Woodruff and a spirited lecture by educator and speaker, Brian Mendler. Mendler spoke of his experience personally with being a troubled student and as a teacher dealing with difficult students, alternatives to the traditional discipline practices and new methods of classroom management.

Following his opening address, the teachers and administrators broke out into three workshop groups: Power struggles unplugged, Youth yoga and mindfulness, and Helping those who hurt: Creating a connected culture. Each focused on improving classroom management as well as motivating and managing hard to reach students.

Rhonda Richetta, Principal of City Springs Elementary and Middle School in Baltimore City, closed out the day with a speech on her experience implementing restorative practices at City Springs which resulted in a tremendous transformation in school climate and significant reduction in school suspensions.

This professional development session offered teachers an opportunity to learn from one another. PCSB looks forward to seeing all of you at the next Ahead of the Curve Conference.
