Public Hearing Scheduled on Proposal to Revoke MEI Futures Academy's Charter

Washington, D.C. —The D.C. Public Charter School Board has scheduled an informal hearing on the proposed revocation of MEI Futures Academy Public Charter School’s (MEI) charter, on Thursday March 19, 2009. The hearing will take place at the Hope Community Public Charter School – Lamond Campus, 6200 Kansas Avenue, NW Washington, DC from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
During it’s February 23, 2009 meeting, the D.C. Public Charter School Board (the PCSB) approved a proposal to revoke MEI’s charter. MEI is a candidate for revocation as a result of violating the terms of its charter agreement and applicable law according to the written decision provided by the Board.
The public hearing agenda will include an overview of the proposal to revoke the charter of MEI Futures Academy, a presentation by the MEI school leadership, questions and answers, and public comment by community members.
The D.C. Public Charter School Board will render a final written decision within 30 days of the conclusion of the informal hearing. Community members who would like to offer public comment should contact the PCSB offices at 202.328.2660 no later than 3pm on Wednesday March 18, 2009. Public testimony will be limited to two minutes per person. A thirty minute block of time has been allocated to this portion of the hearing and community members will be called in order of phone requests. Community members are asked to bring a written version of their comments for the record. The D.C. Public Charter School Board currently oversees 59 public charter schools on 95 campuses, serving more than 25,000 students in every ward of the city.
