Washington, D.C. — Rick Cruz was sworn in Monday by Mayor Vincent C. Gray as the newest member of the DC Public Charter School Board.  Cruz was the executive director of DC Prep Public Charter School in 2012-13 and also was at Teach for America as the Vice President of Regional Operations. He works at FSG, a research group, as the co-lead of the Education and Youth Practice.

He succeeds board member Emily Bloomfield, whose term expired in February. Board Chair John H. “Skip” McKoy said Cruz’s background and experience in operations will be an asset to the Board.

“I am passionate about working to improve the education opportunities for youth in DC, and look forward to serving,” said Cruz.

McKoy also thanked outgoing board member Herbert R. Tillery for his board service. Tillery joined the board in July 2013, stepping into the vacancy left by outgoing Board Chair Brian W. Jones. Tillery, executive director of the College Success Foundation - DC, is stepping down effective October 31 because of increased work duties.

“Herb Tillery brought exceptional insight to the Board through his decades of work with young people and passion for improving student lives. He will be missed,” McKoy said.
