The State of Education in Black America 2015
The Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) and the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools (NAPCS) hosted a briefing on “The State of Education in Black America 2015” for congressional staff.
The briefing focused on how public charter schools and parental choice are providing supportive learning environments for black students. The panel included five leaders in education. Among these five panelists was Selma Patillo-Simms, a parent of a student at DC International School, and Shantelle Wright, the founder of Achievement Prep PCS, a Tier 1 school in DC’s Ward 8 community.
Patillo-Simms shared how public charter schools have empowered parents, like her, to make a choice in their child’s education, and put parents on equal footing to accessing a quality education for their child. Wright discussed her school’s efforts to put students on track to graduate, She also shared the key role autonomy has played in public charter schools to dedicate resources where they are most needed without going through a large bureaucracy.
