Washington, D.C. — The D.C. Public Charter School Board (PCSB) last night accepted Thea Bowman Preparatory Academy Public Charter School’s request to relinquish its charter.  In a letter to the PCSB, Thea Bowman’s Board of Trustees said the school has struggled with lower than expected enrollment since it opened in 2008 and they did not believe they would be able to remain financially viable next year.  The school will cease operations at the end of the school year. Thea Bowman is located at 330 21st Street, NE and serves 79 students in grades 5-8.

“It is in the best interest of our students and families to relinquish the charter at the end of the school year,” said Craig Powell, Chair, Thea Bowman Board of Trustees. “We will work closely with our parents to identify next year’s placement options, and continue our efforts in providing our students quality instruction for the remainder of the school year,” he said. The school has notified the families of their decision and will work with the PCSB to ensure an orderly closure.

As part of its oversight process, the PCSB will host a community forum within the next two weeks to assist parents in finding new schools, will oversee the liquidation and distribution of school assets, and will facilitate the secure transfer of student records to the students’ new schools.

“Charter school closure is never an ideal outcome”, said Brian Jones, Chair of the PCSB. “But when closure is necessary to serve the best interests of students, the PCSB will do everything possible to minimize the disruption for families, by bringing forth resources to ease the transition to new schools.  We are committed to ensuring that tax payer investments are protected both during a school’s operation and after its closure.”

Thea Bowman is one of the 52 public charter schools that the D.C. Public Charter School Board currently oversees.   Public charter schools now serve approximately 39% of all public school students in Washington, D.C.  Learn more about PCSB at www.dcpubliccharter.com
