United Kingdom Secretary of State for Education Visits DC Prep PCS and Washington Yu Ying PCS
UK Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove MP was joined by several UK Department for Education staffers including Beth Armstrong, (Special Political Advisor) and Pamela Dow (Principal Private Secretary), as well as British Embassy official Emily Braid (Senior Social Policy Advisor) and the DC Public Charter School Board’s Scott Pearson (Executive Director) visited DC Prep PCS’ Edgewood Middle Campus and Washington Yu Ying PCS.
As part of Gove's education-focused visit to Washington, he met with students and teachers to hear about key aspects of the academic and character educations models that result in student success. The delegation also spent time observing a reading lesson and a math lesson.
Background on Secretary Gove
Michael Gove is the UK Secretary of State for Education. Born and brought up in Scotland, he was educated in the state and independent sectors. He read English at Oxford University before embarking on a career in journalism with the BBC and the Times.
In 2002, he helped found the think tank Policy Exchange, becoming its first chairman. Policy Exchange is now Britain’s biggest and most influential centre-right think tank. Gove was elected to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Surrey Heath in 2005.
In Parliament, Gove has specialized in campaigning for improved educational opportunities for the poorest, easier access to housing for disadvantaged families, and a tougher line on crime and action to deal with the root causes of terrorism.
Gove was appointed Conservative Spokesman on Housing and Planning in December 2005 and Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families in July 2007, before being appointed Secretary of State for Education by David Cameron in June 2010.
