2023 Summer Programming at DC Public Charter Schools

May 19, 2023

As the school year winds down, summer programming at DC public charter schools is set to start. Read more to learn about the different opportunities offered to students.

As the warm weather approaches, so do the summer months – and summer programming. Many DC public charter schools are offering summer classes or activities this year, which are primarily limited to students enrolled in their respective school.

Schools’ programs generally start between the last week of June and second week of July. Many curriculums offer educational opportunities and chances for students to make up schoolwork ahead of the next school year.

The following types of academic programs are available to students via the school they are enrolled:

  • Extended School Year (ESY)
  • Summer School
  • Summer Enrichment
  • Summer Bridge
  • Credit Recovery
  • GED Support
  • Tutoring

Some schools are also participating in former DC Mayor Marion S. Barry’s Summer Youth Development Program (SYEP), which matches DC students between the ages of 14 and 24 with subsidized professional opportunities within the public and private sectors. The program begins on June 26, 2023 and ends August 4. Public charter schools offering SYEP opportunities are Cesar Chavez PCS for Public Policy, Kingsman Academy PCS, Paul PCS International High School, and Richard Wright PCS for Journalism and Media Arts.

Several schools’ programs also offer fun-filled learning opportunities, in subjects such as science, math, and art. At many campuses, students can play sports like basketball, soccer, track and field, and dance. Some schools are even offering anime club and chess, like Maya Angelou PCS, or e-sports, Dungeons and Dragons, yearbook and cooking, like Digital Pioneers Academy PCS.

Broadly, schools’ programs serve students of all ages. A total of 112 schools are offering programming for students needing special education, and 83 schools’ activities support students designated as at-risk. 75 schools’ programs are also open to Emerging Multilingual Learners.

A handful of DC public charter schools are opening their doors to students from all over the District, especially prospective families. Notably, the District of Columbia International School will host a summer camp for all students entering grades 6 to 9, regardless of their enrollment status in the school. Summer at DCI features athletics and activities like theater, cooking, and robotics.

As DC PCSB gathers more information on summer programming for students, we will update this blog. Please visit the school’s website or reach out directly to get more information.

Other Summer Programs

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation is offering several different programs at local recreation centers for residents of any age, from 6 months to seniors. Skills offered include learning to swim, sports like soccer and basketball, fitness, and cooperative play.

Registration for aquatics programs opened at noon on 5/16, and at noon on 5/17 for non-aquatic activities. Program registration for non-residents for any type of class opens 5/23. For more information, click here.
